Kokrajhar, Aug 20: Along with rest of the state, tea estates in Kokrajhar district were closed on Monday morning following day-long strikes carried out by labour unions in demand of daily wage hike, proper facilities for hand to mouth labours who are working in the tea estates. The labour union warned more vigorous movement if their demands are not met immediately in the days to come.
The tea estates were seen deserted in their working hour as labours remained aloof from working for the day. No labour reached to the tea-estates, apart from Kokrajhar tea estate, Daloabari and Banglabari tea estates in lower Assam’s Kokrajhar district on Monday.
The labour unions, like Akhil Bharatiya Chah Mazdoor Sangha (ABCMS), Centre for Indian Trade Unions (CITU) and All Adivashi Students Association of Assam ( AASAA) demanded that the daily wage of tea estate labours be hiked up to Rs.351 from existing Rs.167, providing of proper facilities for the tea-estate labours.
Hundreds of labours staged protest demonstration in front of Kokrajhar tea estate under the banner of Akhil Bharatiya Chah Mazdoor Sangha, CITU and supported from AASAA and shouted slogans demanded hike of daily wage, proper facilities for the labours who are working the tea estates.
The labours alleged that government and tea estate companies have been depriving the labours since years from their genuine wages which are prescribed in the company spirits. They said that government and companies never want welfare and uplift of the labours, who are hand to mouth earner for their livelihood. They warned to take more vigorous movement in support of their demand and issues if their demands are not met.
