Temple priest killed in Kokrajhar, police detains two

Kokrajhar, Sept 10: Sensation prevails in Kokrajhar following the murder of a temple priest by unidentified miscreants on the wee hours on Sunday. Police detained two persons in connection with the killing of the priest at a ‘shani mandir’ in Kokrajhar. Besides investigation claimed thorough probe into the incident with deployment of strong security in the area.

According to eye witness, a group of two-four unknown miscreants wearing black clothes entered the temple premises near Kokrajhar railway station and brutally murdered the priest at around 2.30 am on Sunday. The deceased has been identified as Nikhil Debnath (58).
Madan Debnath and Mithun Debnath, sons of the deceased said that their father was serving as a pujari (priest) at the temple and also deals as a lottery agent at daily bazar in Kokrajhar town. After completion of all puja activities for the day, Nikhil was supposed to sleep when miscreants killed him.

“The miscreants came wearing black clothes on their head and face to hide their identity,” said Madan Debnath.

Police detained two persons from Kokrajhar town in involvement with the killing. However, police refrained from disclosing any details about the detainees for the interest of proper investigation. Investigation is going on with strong verification after the incident. A piece of iron rod and materials that were used in the killing by miscreants were recovered from the temple complex.

“Main involved culprits would be nabbed immediately,” said Kokrajhar SP Rajen Singh.
Additional DGP Mukesh Agarwal visited the Soni mandir in Kokrajhar town on Sunday evening, and was accompanied with Anurag Agarwal, BTAD(IGP) to take stock about the murde. He said that Debnath was murdered for money by miscreants.

Many leaders and police officials, apart from BTAD chief Hagrama Mohilary, Assam forest minister and local MLA of Kokrajhar east LAC Pramila Rani Brahma visited the temple.

Agarwal arrived in Kokrajhar at 5 pm in the evening to visit the Shani mandir following chief minister direction to take stock about the incident. He has inspected all corners of the temple complex where the priest was murdered by unknown. He said that miscreants killed Nikhil for money who has been dealing lottery agent job at Kokrajhar daily bazar.

He said that Nikhil Debnath used to go West Bengal every Sunday for depositing lottery’s money as he sold lotteries in his locality.

Agarwal also told miscreants looted nearly 2.5 lakh from Pujari besides took away a mobile and snatched away of gold chain from his wife. He has expressed his hopeful that culprits would be booked immediately.

BTC chief Hagrama Mohilary visited condemned the killing and termed that professional killer was involved with murder case. He has expressed his suspect that killers killed Pujari for money,who was Pujari in the mandir. “Miscreants must be identified to arrest and punished,” Mohilary said. He also announced to extend two-lakh as ex-gratia to the victim family from BTC administration.

Assam forest minister Pramila Rani Brahma also visited at the Shani mandir on Sunday. She has condemned the killing and hoped that culprits will be booked immediately. She said that Pujari was killed for money by thieves to robbery his money. She has claimed that miscreants have involved behind killing of Nikhil Debnath.
