DIPHU, July 11: Tension is brewing in Meghlaya border after a group of people from Meghalaya entered into Assam and vandalised a signboard put up by the forest department and replaced it with their own with ‘Sabuda, Raid Nongthang, Ri-Bhoi District’ sign on Tuesday.
According to a report, a group of people from Ribhoi district of Meghalaya coming in 10 vehicles entered Sabuda in West Karbi Anglong district and vandalised the signboard installed by range officer of Umjakini Forest Range and replaced it with ‘Sabuda, Raid Nongthang, Ri-Bhoi District’ sign.
Confirming this, the president of Amri-Chinthong Regional Committee of All Assam Gorkha Students’ Union (AAGSU), Kiron Ghimere informed that the group also set ablaze a road roller at Umpakalang and damaged the boundary walls of some government houses on their way.
Meanwhile, West Karbi Anglong deputy commissioner Debojyoti Hazarika informed that the sign board installed by Meghalayan people was removed by forest officials and subsequently seized by the personnel from Ulukunchi Police Outpost.

Rongpi said, “I have come to know of the incident yesterday itself. I have intimated the deputy commissioner and police chief of West Karbi Anglong to bring the situation under control.”
“I also informed the CEM Tuliram Ronghang and HAD minister on the prevailing situation. The people of border areas of West Karbi Anglong as well as people on the other side of Meghalaya do not want to have any disturbances. They want to live peacefully. The people of both the states are interdependent. The people from West Karbi Anglong have to cross into (Meghalaya) Ribhoi district. For people of West Karbi Anglong in the bordering areas the nearest market is in Ribhoi district,” he said.
He called for early settlement border dispute once and for all so that people could live in a peaceful atmosphere.
