DIPHU, Oct 4: Karbi Angling district administration has imposed several restrictions on the size of Durga puja pandals this year due to lack of space. The previous years the puja pandals used to occupy part of the road in some places here.
This year there will be no puja pandal at Latika Cenima Hall infront of Town Out Post (TOP), Matipung Tiniali, Sarthe Colony and etc.
When queried, a former member of the Durga Puja committee, near Latika cinema hall, said the DC office and Diphu Municipal Board (DMB) has not given permission to put-up puja pandal.
“Some likeminded and energetic youth have formed a Puja Committee to put-up puja pandal here. The youth have been organising the pujas each year. But this year they have not obtained permission from DC office and DMB”, the former member said.
In front of TOP, where it used to be the centre of attraction among all the puja pandals, but this time it has missed out as the committee failed to get permission from DC office and DMB.
A former organiser on condition of anonymity said this time the committee has not got permission from DC office and DMB may be due to encroachment of footpaths and roads.
“It is sad as every year there used to be a puja here, visited by a large number of visitors and offer prayers. Though there is no puja pandal, but the committee has decided to conduct one of the usual programme i.e. distribution of clothes to the needy,” he said.
The DC office has informed that in both Diphu and Howraghat sub-divisions from the total of 98 puja committees which applied for putting up puja pandals 82 of them have been granted permission.
Unlike previous years the Madhya Bazaar Durga Puja Committee in Diphu market has reduced the size of the pandal. Also as the public are facing financial crisis due to non-payment of salaries and contract bills and collection of donation has been difficult and has lessen their budget from Rs.3 lakh to Rs.2 50 lakh.
“How can we put-up a big puja pandal as DMB has not allowed to encroach the footpath. People are facing financial constrains due to non-payment of salary and contract bills before Durga puja. We have reduced our budget from Rs. 3 lakhs to Rs.2.50 lakh,” said an office bearer of the puja committee.
On the other hand, Durga Puja pandal put-up at Shiv Bari Road by Shiv Bari Road Durga Puja Committee, looks decorative with lights and designing.
Assistant secretary of the puja committee, Joymalya Debroy said, “Like every year we are celebrating Durga Puja with our family members, friends and relatives. The locality of Shivbari Road like every year is putting-up Durga Puja pandal to allow family members and visitors to take part in the Puja and offer prayers. This is the 34th year we are celebrating Durga Puja here. Considering the market position as there is financial constrains among public we could not go beyond Rs. 2 lakhs budget. From this budget amount we could only gather 50 percent till now,” he added.
