JORHAT, Dec 13: A trailer was completely smashed when the Mariani to Guwahati intercity passenger train hit it at Rajabari here at about 5 am on Monday.
The engine of the train was also dented and had to be cut open before the train could be started again. The train was stalled on the tracks delayed by more than 3 hours as a result of the mishap.
A resident of the area said that they heard a deafening sound and sparks lit up the air as the train coming on the Mariani to Jorhat track hit the engine of the trailer which had stalled on the track for more than three hours.
An eyewitness said that the trailer had backed into the crossing in front of Punjab Engineering Works to pick up a consignment of thela rickshaws, which pick up garbage.
The driver tried to free the massive vehicle from the track but in vain.
“As soon as he heard the whistle of the train both he and the helper jumped off and saved their lives. Luckily the train did not derail on impact,” the eyewitness said.
The Railways completely blocked almost all the crossings to other sides including the DTO, leaving open only the manned Bharat Engineering Works one and those ahead of the DTO office.
