GUWAHATI, Nov 19: United Liberation Front of Asom –Independent (ULFA-I) on Monday denied the reports appeared in a section of the press that well known footballer and peace negotiator Rebati Phukan has been appointed as general secretary of the armed outfit.
In an email to The Hills Times here on Monday, the ULFA-I said the outfit was yet to appoint its general secretary and the responsibility has been entrusted to the chairman and vice chairman of the ULFA-I.
“The report appeared in a section of the press is aimed at cleansing the hands of the abductors of Rebati Phukan. It is also an attempt of the Intelligence agencies with the help of a section of journalists to mislead the people of the state,” Rumel Asom, a member of the outfit’s publicity wing, said in the statement.
Earlier, a newspaper report claimed that Phukan has been appointed as the permanent general secretary of ULFA (I) and as per the outfit’s norms, Phukan has taken an organisational name as Jyotishman Asom alias RP alias Agni.
Rebati Phukan, who has been working as a peace negotiator between the Centre and ULFA had been missing from his Ambikagiri Nagar residence since April 22, last. Police are yet to get a lead on whereabouts of Phukan.
