Week-Long Birth Anniversary Celebrations of Padmanath Gohain Baruah Concludes

SIVASAGAR, Dec 17: Organised by Asom Ahom Sabha, the week-long 150th birth anniversary celebrations of ‘Sahitya Kandari’ Padmanath Gohain Baruah came to an end in Sivasagar Boarding Field on Thursday with a colourful cultural programme in the evening.

Attending the open session, Sivasagar MLA Akhil Gogoi said that Padmanath Gogain Baruah belonged to the Ahoms ethnically but he did everything for the Assamese language and society as a whole. Gohain Baruah was a pioneering figure among the Assamese as a school textbook writer.  The Padmanath Gohain Baruah Memorial Award was presented to Dr Arabinda Rajkonwar, the HoD, Assamese, North Lakhimpur College while the Panindranath Gogoi Memorial Award was given to Jugal Lochan Das. The awardees were given Rs 25,020 besides citations, Tai gamosa, seleng and mementos. Umakanta Konwar, president, Asom Ahom Sabha, presided over the meeting. The meeting, compeered by Anup Borpatra Gohain and Rajlakshmi Dihingia, also felicitated Tilok Handique and Chandrakamal Gogoi for their contributions to society.

The cultural programme was inaugurated by educationist Dayananda Borgohain. Noted Bihuwa Khagen Gogoi, radio artist Pranoti Baruah and singer Florina Gogoi enthralled the audience with their performance.

The open session ended with a somewhat subdued mood among the organizers and participants as none of the special guests turned up to address the open meeting. Further, there were only a few participants in the seminar other than the school children.
