DHEMAJI, Mar. 4: Acting on a tip off, wildlife officials of East Siang district in Arunachal Pradesh nabbed five poachers from Borguli Range in Daying Ering Memorial Wildlife Sanctuary located at Pasighat town outskirt on Friday. The officials also seized three SBBL guns with 7 live ammunitions from them.
The poachers have been identified as Banning Doso, Kayimang Borang, Tagmin Sisam, Orik Tayeng and Kuk Tayeng of Mebo area in East Siang district. However, one of the poachers managed to escape from the spot.
Pasighat Divisional Forest Officer (wildlife) Tasang Taga informed that the team of wildlife official conducted special drive against hunting and poaching of wild animals in the area. The officials on specific information of wildlife poaching in the sanctuary, on the eve of ‘Unying Aran’, (hunting festival of Adi tribe)’, intercepted the poachers inside the sanctuary and caught them red handed with the three SBBL guns and wild meat from their possession.
The officials also seized a carcass of a porcupine and a monitor lizard besides huge quantity dried meat of wild boar, Sambar and hog deer. The arrested persons were later handed over to East Siang district police for further investigation.
A case under section- 51 (i) Wildlife Protection acts and Section- 27 of Arms Act has been registered in Pasighat police station against the poachers and the police are continuing investigation to bust the racket.
Earlier too, police and wildlife officials in the district recovered wildlife carcasses along with smoked wild meat from Pasighat and Mebo area and a number of people were booked under Wildlife Protection acts.
Meanwhile, wildlife officials are camping at different locations of the wildlife sanctuary and mobilizing the people to protect wild animals of the sanctuary. Range Officer Damek Koyu has been camping at Sivaguri at lower portion of the sanctuary bordering Assam to conduct meeting with the people of fringe villages in Assam against killing of wildlife. The officials have warned the villagers not to enter the sanctuary without proper permission of the authority.
