AIZAWL, march 5 (Newmai): ‘Zoram Ni’ or Zoram Day was observed in different parts of Mizoram today under the aegis of state’s apex student body, the Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP) or Mizo Students’ Association to mark the 52nd anniversary of the “bombing of Aizawl by Indian Air Force” back in 1966.

In Aizawl, the observation of Zoram Ni was held at Lal Thanhawla Auditorium during which Lalthlamuana Ralte, an assistant professor from Pachhunga University College and Lalhruaitluanga Chawngte, MZP adviser presented papers on “March 5, 1966 chanchin” or the history of March 5,1966 and “Aizawl bomb leh tunlai Zoram khawvel” or Bombing of Aizawl and present Mizoram respectively.

Speaking on the occasion, MZP president L. Ramdiliana Renthlei said the main motive of observing Zoram Ni is to revive and bring unity among all indigenous Zo communities, and to instill solidarity and brotherhood among them through the hardships they faced. “It is being observed neither to instigate a political party nor to hurt the feeling of individual or a group,” he added. He also expressed desire that the observation of Zoram Ni inculcates in younger generations the feeling of oneness of the Mizo people.

“The hardship and oppression faced by innocent Mizos during trouble years cannot be underestimated and we want the government of India to know that we cannot forget the cruelty and brutality meted out to innocent Mizos during the insurgency period,” he said.

Since 2008, MZP has been observing ‘Zoram Ni’ to mark the anniversary of the “bombing”.

Meanwhile, People’s Representation for Identity and Status of Mizoram (PRISM), a newly floated political party sought apology from the Government of India for “the bombing” Aizawl in 1966.
