“It is not a lack of love, but a lack of friendship that makes unhappy marriages.”
– Friedrich Nietzsche
The performance of the BJP in Northeast is an indication of things to come in 2019. Whatever detractors may say one cannot ignore the BJP. The saffron surge in the northeast is indication of what the people are thinking. The victory of the BJP in Tripura is dapped as an ideological victory of the saffron party in view of the long reign of the Left in the state. But there are other factors into play. There is general disillusionment among the indigenous tribes, salary of government employees and general complacency. The present state of things in India is a result of the long so called a secular party’s rule of the nation. The Modi dispensation which has not even completed one term has been accused impotently by the opposition of depriving the poor and fleecing the nation in favour of the corporate. Gullible intellectuals and a section of the media has made big issue of the steps taken by Prime Minister Modi but when questions are arise on the work done by the long rule of the non-BJP governments no convincing answer can be given by the opposition. The strength of the BJP lies in picking persons of merit by observing the past record of the particular person even of the opposition party rather than relying on regional dynasties. The present BJP is a combination of PM Modi and Amit Shah’s gauging on the mode of the nation, its agenda on development and picking up specific strategists for specific regions of the nation. In Tripura the BJP has decimated the Left combine on all fronts and other parties and decimated the Congress in all three states of Tripura, Nagaland and Meghalaya reducing the party to irrelevance. The BJP may have risen on the strength of a particular religion but after becoming a political party in a nation like India where all religion of the world is present, all races of men exist and thousands of languages spoken it can no longer afford to be a theocracy based fundamentalist party. This has long dawned on the BJP’s leadership than it has on the opposition. Decline of the Congress and raise of the BJP is not on the opposition’s projection of the saffron party’s hard line Hindu majority agenda but on the lack of credibility on the part of the Congress and lack of touch of the Left party with the reality on the ground. And above all the BJP has succeeded in convincing the people that ‘ache din’ will come, there will be development and corruption will be eliminated and no amount of suffering due to demonetisation will take that believe away from the common man. PM Modi is the only man in India who has brought development into the lexicon of the common man in all these years of independence. The elimination of ghost accounts of ration cards, fraud BPL schemes and blocking of leaks in welfare schemes meant for the poor are realistic. The common man is also supporting it by giving up subsidies on LPG connections and surrendering ration cards. All said and done, but can we do as a nation by giving up dissent? The faster, the more good, it will be for the sake of the nation for someone to come up with meaningful opposition rather than just dwell on past fanciful story of a particular political party when they were in power and inducing fear in the minority.
