KOKRAJHAR, Aug 9: A boy from Kokrajhar Debobrat Brahma, class VII student of Kokrajhar Don Bosco School, is the lone player from the north eastern region who has been selected for joining the Indian team to play in the 10th BFA Asian Baseball Championship, 2018 to be held at Taipei in Taiwan from August 13 to 19. He is the youngest player from the north eastern states in the international event.
Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal, Union Minister of States for Railways Rajen Gohain and the department of Sports and Youth Welfare, government of Assam have expressed their best wishes before his departure to the Indian squad.
Brahma joined the hectic training at Kokrajhar under the coaches of Assam Police Manoj, Hemanta and Sanjoy Das of Guwahati at Titaguri and Tiniali field under the guidance of Dr. Ashima Begum, Jt. Secretary of Amateur Baseball Federation of India and Mrs. Jajnabati Mahilary, CHD, Sports and Youth Welfare, BTC. After that he went for vigorous training at Panjab University, Chandigarh from 3rd to 12th July in the National Selection Camp under the National Coach Jitendra Shinde of Madhya Pradesh and Amarjit Singh Munna of Ludhiana. Among the 30 probable from Punjab, Chandigarh, Haryana, Rajasthan, New Delhi, MP, Orissa, Maharastra, Himachal Pradesh and Bihar, 15 players including Debobrat Brahma have been selected for Indian Baseball Team Under-12 category.
The Indian team will fly to Taipei, Taiwan on Friday (10 August) to participate in the 10th BFA Asian Baseball Championship, 2018. India is placed in group B in the championship. They will face off with Hongkong, South Korea and Pakistan and if they win in the group will qualify for World Cup to be held in 2019.
Debobrat Brahma is the son of Jaypal Brahma of Kokrajhar who is also Inspector of Schools, Chirang. Meanwhile, the Minister of Sports and Youth Welfare, Govt. of Punjab has felicitated the boys of Indian team on Thursday at Punjab University, Chandigarh prior to their departure to Taiwan.
