GUWAHATI, Oct 2: Assam cricket team, lead by Gokul Sarma, will leave for Delhi on Tuesday to play their first Ranji match of the season against Delhi. The game will kick off on October 6. After a long period it will be the first occasion when Assam will play Ranji trophy without a single outstation player.
Selectors this season decided to go with almost same set of players that played in the last season without the outstation cricketers. There is only one new face in the team and it is spinner Rahul Singh. Talking to the reporters on the eve of the departure the captain of the team Gokul Sarma admitted that absence of outstation players in the team is not a worried factor for them. “We are not worried. I feel it is a good opportunity for the players to take the responsibility and cement their place in the team,” said captain. Assam Cricket Association this time forced to change the Head coach of the team and that too in a very last minute as Sunil Joshi, who coached the side last season, took the charge of Bangladesh cricket team. He was replaced by Lalchand Rajput. Although Rajput got very little time to make necessary adjustment in the team but captain is pleased with the style of work of new Head Coach.
“Actually this time rain created a little problem during the last part of our preparation. However sir took two classes on the different aspects of the game and I feel it would really inspired the team members to bring out their best in the coming season,” added Sarma.
Gokul found optimistic about his own form also. Last season he failed to perform as per the expectation but the selectors this year keep faith on him and also gave the responsibility to lead the team. In a brief reaction Gokul said, “I worked hard throughout the off season and whenever got the opportunity I tried to perform with my bat. This is one more opportunity for me and I will try to make everyone happy with my performance.”
